Halloween Dog Parade

I know, I know. Another non-food related post. I'm sorry, but this one is just to good to sit on any longer. If there's one thing I love more than cooking, it's animals...and animals in cute costumes. This morning was the Halloween parade for Tails in the City, a cute little dog store right on my block. Last year I stumbled upon it (how could I not, it's literally right outside my front door), but this year I knew it was coming and brought my camera.

There were the usual spooky costumes: a devil and a bat. And of course pumpkins.

Sniff party!

A shark, some flowers, a princess (?), and some Bears fans.

A ballerina dog...I don't know how she felt about that leotard.

Food dogs! Hot dogs, an ear of corn, a bunch of grapes...and a farmers market.

This guy kept trying to shake his cape off.

PUPPIES! A ladybug bulldog, and a Robin Hood yellow lab.

Plain pug.

And, in my opinion, the three most creative costumes. A jockey:

Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich in a little jail suit with a tiny wig, and a "For Sale: Senate Seat" sign.

And...Lady Gaga.

Images of Fall

It's Friday! And I've got some fantastic photos of fall, foliage, and farmers market. That's an alliteration. See, I do remember things I learned in high school!

No recipes today. I did make a mushroom stock last night that I'll share with you next week, but for now I just want to share these photos.

I actually had time to spend at the market this week, inside of my usual quick break from work to grab things for dinner. It was so nice to wander around and really take everything in.

Only one more week of markets left this year. Sniffle.

I really don't get tired of fall. Winter - I'm over it after New Years. Summer - I'm always sad to see it go, but tired of the hot weather. Fall could stick around forever and it would be fine with me.

Happy Birthday...

...to me! Yesterday was my birthday, so that's why there was no post. I was too busy having fun! But it wouldn't be right if I didn't share some of my birthday treats.

One of my coworkers bough me a carrot cupcake from Sprinkles (actually two cupcakes, but we ate one at work), and my sister sent me pistachio macaroons from Mike's Pastry.

Peter took me to Piccolo Sogno, which I was really excited about because we haven't been in so long - it's been impossible to get a reservation there. We hadn't been since it was cold out, so I hadn't yet seen the back patio. It was so beautiful, all the trees were lit up. Sorry the picture is a bit blurry.

I only took a couple pictures. This one because it was something new I hadn't ordered there - chick pea flour fries with parmesan and rosemary.

We didn't order dessert because I had something waiting at home for me, but they always bring a dish of mini biscotti...and they added a little something special to this one.

And my last birthday treat - Peter got me a baby carrot cake. What a great birthday!

What's In Your Fridge?

I'm back! You probably didn't even miss me, did you. I was pretty busy last weekend so I took a brief hiatus (see also: computer, near death experience). Sadly I haven't cooked anything fun for the last couple days, and I did try a new restaurant but forgot my camera! Ugh! We went to the Purple Pig and it was excellent. Our server informed us that Bon Appetit just wrote about them, putting them on their 10 best new restaurant list, so we felt lucky to beat the rush that will surely come over the next few weeks. I guess I'll just have to go back so I can take some pictures!

The idea for today's post comes from my sister, who sent me a Daily Candy Facebook album of what editors that work there have in their refrigerators. So fun! Here's how my fridge is looking at the moment:

Pretty standard, I guess. Although I did count 11 - yes, 11 - kinds of cheese in there. And Peter just made a trip to Binny's which explains the abundance of weird, hoppy beers I don't like. Other than that...two Britta pitchers (don't ask), some leftovers, lots of mustards and jams on the top, and some eggs and leafy greens on the bottom. And my beloved milk is on the door so it didn't make it into the picture.

Anyone have anything amazing, disgusting, or just plain old funny in their fridge at the moment?

Odds and Ends

I know, I know. I've been slacking. Between a busy work schedule and lots of friends in town, I haven't had much time to cook or write. This is going to be kind of a mish-mosh of a post, but better than nothing - right? I'll go in chronological order here.

In preparation for the opening of Sprinkles Cupcakes in Chicago, last week there was a Sprinkles truck in Chicago serving up a preview of what's to come. I didn't actually see it, but Peter did and got us a couple cupcakes. Aww.

That's red velvet on the left and chocolate coconut on the right. They were so, so good. The cake part was really fresh and soft, and the icing was perfect. If I'm eating a Magnolia or Billy's cupcake with their traditional vanilla buttercream icing, I often scrape part of it off because it's just too rich and sugary to eat the whole heap they put on each cupcake. But the Sprinkles icing was really fluffy and not too sweet. They had an opening party last Saturday afternoon that was by invitation/RSVP. I found out about it on Facebook so it's not like it was that exclusive, but I didn't think it would be as crazy as it was. We walked over there about halfway through and it was such a madhouse we just turned around. They are officially open for business now so I'll try to go back soon.

Friday night we ventured out to a new place called Rootstock. It's near Humboldt Park. I can't take credit for finding it, we met up with Jacquilyn and a bunch of other people who decided to go there. We had a great table outside, enjoyed some drinks and appetizers, placed an order for dinner, and then the storm of the century arrived (almost 8 inches of rain!!!) and we made a dash for inside.

Sorry, no pictures of food. It was very dark at both our table outdoors and inside, plus I didn't want to freak out my new acquaintances with my food photography. But the food was great - charcuterie, small flatbread pizzas, a great burger, PEI mussels, delicious fries, and lots of other goodies. It was a fun to try a new place that I never would have found on my own.

After the restaurant we made a mad dash through the monsoon to the California Clipper, a bar just across the intersection. It turned into one of those great nights you just can't plan for, and couldn't recreate if you tried. We all got to the bar soaking wet, and because of the rain it was pretty empty which was nice. They had a great country band playing, and then to top it off this man in a rain slicker carrying a small cooler walked in. What was in the cooler, you ask?

Oh, just some amazing tamales. $5 for a baggie of 5 cheese and poblano pepper tamales, with some green salsa.

Last Sunday we went to the Publican for brunch. I had only been for dinner and was excited for a different experience there. And it didn't disappoint. I ordered red wine poached eggs over sourdough toast, with bearnaise sauce and prosciutto.

Oh man. I ate everything on my plate.

And Sunday night we went to Table Fifty-Two. I didn't get any photos of food, it's a real classy joint plus we had a big group. I did take a photo of the outside of the restaurant because it's a cute little house. I guess I have a thing for restaurants in houses.

I feel like only showing the outside of the restaurant is like saying "I have a secret but I'm not going to tell you". I'll just say that a couple of my favorite things I ate there were fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, and a vegetable and manchengo wood fired pizza. I guess I'll have to take one for the team and go back so I can get more photos.

Wow, busy weekend. All this eating has left me wiped out.

World Cup Fever!

I forgot to post this last night - I walked by Quartino yesterday and this is what their sidewalk sign said:

World Cup soccer and delicious Italian food? Yes please!

If you were stranded on a desert island...

Sometimes, I like to ask Peter "what three foods would you want for the rest of your life if you were stranded on a desert island?" Because I want to hear what he says. And, because I want him to ask me what my three foods would be. It's a big decision...lots of things to take into consideration. First of all, what is a desert island? Do they really even exist? This is what Google thinks a desert island looks like:

I wouldn't mind living there. I also wouldn't mind living on a DESSERT island. Anyway, the last time we played this game my answer was: roast chicken, fruit salad, and warm chocolate chip cookies. Today, Peter's three foods are:
No sweets? Boys just don't care as much about sugar as girls. These discussions really turn serious. Phrases such as "I don't think you would want saffron every day for the rest of your life" and "Ugh, why do you make me choose?" are uttered. So what are my current choices?
  • lobster roll (made with Lanney's mom's lobster salad. Hi Lanney!)
  • strawberry shortcake from Pastis
  • Can I say a cheese plate? Or does that count as more than one thing? If I have to pick one, d'Affinois.
So, what three foods would YOU choose? Please leave comments! Does anyone read this thing? Bueller? Bueller?

P.O.S.H.

A love of food and cooking goes hand-in-hand with a love of dishes/glasses/serveware, n'est-ce pas? If you love to cook beautiful things, it seems only natural to also want to serve them in a beautiful way. So while this post isn't technically about food or cooking, it's about an important part of the process.

P.O.S.H. is an adorable shop a few blocks away from my apartment. It's quite dangerous because I want to buy everything in there. If only I had the cabinet space...and the $$. They sell a lot of vintage hotel and restaurant china and flatware, and flea market goodies. But they have lots of other odds and ends. And if you don't live in Chicago, they sell most of the items in the store online.

They have vintage hotel flatware:

And some very fancy silver:

A lot of the things in the store are French, like these little bistro tip plates:

Here's some of their selection of restaurant china, as well as plain white dishes in every shape and size:

And some fancier, very pretty china:

This picture is a little dark, but I had to include it because I really love these. They're jadeite cake stands, glasses, and there's a pitcher too which isn't in the picture. The cake stands also come in pink milk glass.

And, some very cute tomato salt and pepper shakers, and dish towels.

P.O.S.H. is at 513 N. State Street, between Ohio and Ontario.
